Named an unexpected product that causes chronic stress

Scientists have discovered new potential risks associated with the consumption of products containing high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Nutritional Neuroscience, a study on young female Sprague-Dawley rats showed that regular consumption of HFCS-sweetened water led to an increase in adrenal gland mass - a sign of chronic stress, as well as to prolonged estrous cycles, indicating reproductive function disorders.
High-fructose corn syrup is widely used in carbonated beverages, sauces, baked goods, and other processed foods. Its widespread distribution is associated with an increase in the consumption of added sugars. Previous studies have already indicated a link between excessive syrup consumption and obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The new experiment showed that rats receiving HFCS drank more liquid, ate less food, but demonstrated the most pronounced changes in the functioning of the stress system and brain.
Analysis of gene expression in the hypothalamus revealed disturbances in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle, as well as in the activity of the Engrailed-2 gene, which in humans is associated with an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorders.
According to the study authors, the results indicate that high consumption of high-fructose corn syrup may have adverse effects on the nervous system, including stress mechanisms and brain development.
