Spain player Cucurella grew out his hair for his son with autism

Spain and Real Madrid defender Marc Cucurella has revealed the personal reason why he has not changed his hairstyle for many years. According to the footballer, his long hair helps his son Mateo, who has been diagnosed with autism, recognize his father during matches.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Haberler, the athlete shared this in the Amazon Prime documentary Married to the Game. Cucurella admitted that for the sake of his son's health, he would be willing to give up any material possessions. He noted that he keeps his long hair not only because the boy likes it, but also so that Mateo can always easily spot him on the football pitch.

Mateo was diagnosed with autism when he turned three years old. The footballer's wife Claudia Rodriguez recalls that the first years after the diagnosis were a real ordeal for the family. According to her, every day the child would come home from school in tears, and the parents struggled for a long time to find the necessary support. Cucurella himself admitted that the hardest part was seeing his son's suffering and feeling powerless in the face of the situation.

Over time, the family managed to find a school for Mateo in London where he receives the help he needs. Now, as the parents note, even the smallest achievements by the boy become a cause for great joy.

The footballer also shared that his son's condition affects his professional decisions as well. When considering offers from clubs, the family first and foremost evaluates whether specialized schools and opportunities for necessary therapy are available in the new city.
