NASA Revealed How Much the US Will Spend on Sending a Nuclear-Powered Spacecraft to Mars

The United States plans to spend approximately $2.1 billion on building and launching the SR-1 (Space Reactor-1) Freedom spacecraft with a nuclear power system to Mars in late 2028. NASA spokesperson Jen Whitree told TASS about this.

She noted that the agency considers this project an important step toward developing nuclear systems. They will allow the American side to operate farther beyond low Earth orbit, for longer periods and more effectively.

Whitree added that existing developments will be used in building the spacecraft, such as the PPE (Power and Propulsion Element) electric propulsion module.
