Agha Mohammad Shah Qajar: Great Military Commander or Ruthless Ruler?

Agha Mohammad Shah Qajar, a representative of an influential clan and the founder of the Turkic Qajar dynasty, set a key goal for himself: to unite the country and Azerbaijani khanates, which had fallen apart after the death of Nader Shah, under a single authority.

Among historians, there is still no consensus on the reasons for his castration: the versions include punishment by order of Adil Shah, a severe wound in battle, and a secret love affair with the daughter of Zaki Khan Zand.

His enemies expected that being a eunuch would become an insurmountable obstacle on his path to the throne. However, during the years of captivity, Agha Mohammad deepened his knowledge of history, mathematics, and military affairs, and upon gaining his freedom, he formed a powerful army in the shortest time. He subjugated the southern khanates without bloodshed, united most of Northern Azerbaijan, captured Tiflis, made Tehran the capital, and, girding himself with the sword of Shah Ismail Khatai, proclaimed himself the successor of Safavid statehood.

In 1797, the shah was killed by his personal servants in his bed in Shusha. His severed head was first sent to Ibrahimkhalil Khan, and then to the ruler of Georgia. The body was transported to Tehran and, by order of Fath-Ali Shah, buried in Najaf. Thus tragically ended the journey of a ruler who went down in history as a harsh and merciless sovereign, yet at the same time a mighty commander who sought to unite the fragmented Azerbaijani lands into a single state.
