A tea that helps lose weight has been named
Ginger tea enhances thermogenesis, meaning it helps the body expend more energy even at rest, which promotes weight loss, gastroenterologist Evgeny Belousov from AO "Medicina" (Academician Roitberg's clinic) told "Gazeta.Ru."
"Ginger tea contains gingerol, an active compound with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Gingerol slows the growth and reproduction of bacteria and viruses. Ginger enhances thermogenesis, which helps the body expend more energy. It is capable of managing body weight and increases metabolism. It is recommended to drink 100 ml of the beverage half an hour before breakfast or lunch — this will help speed up metabolism and prepare the body for food intake. However, the effect is moderate and only works in combination with diet and physical activity," the doctor explained.
However, the doctor emphasizes: without dietary adjustments and physical exercise, the effect of the tea will be minimal. To lose weight, it is necessary to create a calorie deficit, which is achievable through a balanced diet and regular workouts.
"But ginger has contraindications. These include gastrointestinal diseases: gastritis with high acidity, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and erosive lesions. Ginger can irritate the mucous membrane and trigger flare-ups. Caution should also be exercised with gallstone disease: ginger stimulates bile release, which in the presence of stones can cause spasm, pain, or duct obstruction. Additionally, such tea can lower blood pressure and enhance the effect of antihypertensive medications," the doctor said.
