The new coronavirus strain PJ.2.1 may differ from other variants of the virus by causing more pronounced sore throat and prolonged fatigue after the infection.

As reported by BAKU.WS citing the Russian press, this was announced by Doctor of Medical Sciences, infectious disease specialist and virologist Yelena Malinnikova.

Clinical researchers note that when infected with the new strain, patients may experience more severe sore throat, and asthenia (increased fatigue and weakness) may persist for a longer period after recovery.

According to the virologist, modern test systems have been developed in Russia that can detect all coronavirus strains. Thanks to this, medical professionals can identify the virus even when new mutations emerge.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that it is monitoring the spread of the new coronavirus variant. According to the organization, its share is increasing in a number of countries, including the United States and Canada. Individual cases of infection have also been registered in Europe, although their number remains small so far.

Despite its rapid spread, there is currently no clinical data indicating that PJ.2.1 causes a more severe course of the disease compared to other recently identified SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Specialists also do not report an increase in cases of pneumonia, respiratory failure, or fatalities associated with this strain. The main at-risk group continues to be elderly people aged 60 and older.
