Curcumin - a natural compound found in turmeric - may help protect the liver from age-related changes, inflammation, and damage. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of a scientific review published in the journal Food & Function.

As reported by BAKU.WS, the researchers analyzed scientific data on the interaction between the gut, its microbiota, and the liver. This system plays an important role in metabolism and immune function, and disruptions in its functioning can contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

With age, the composition of the gut microbiota changes, the protective barrier of the intestine weakens, and inflammatory processes intensify. As a result, more substances capable of damaging liver cells may enter the liver.

According to the studies reviewed, curcumin can act on several mechanisms simultaneously: supporting the protective barrier of the intestine, improving the composition of the microbiota, and regulating bile acid metabolism.

In addition, scientific data point to curcumin's potential ability to reduce inflammation and liver fibrosis - a process in which healthy tissue is gradually replaced by connective tissue.

The authors of the review believe that curcumin deserves attention as a potential agent for the prevention of age-related disorders in the functioning of the gut and liver. However, additional studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness in humans.
