Symptoms of the new coronavirus strain PJ.2.1 may be similar to those of a cold or flu.
This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the World Health Organization (WHO).
"The symptoms of COVID-19, influenza, and other respiratory infections can overlap," the organization warned.
The WHO emphasized that it is impossible to accurately determine which specific virus caused the infection based on symptoms alone. In light of this, specialists recommended conducting testing.
The day before, the WHO reported the spread of the new COVID-19 strain PJ.2.1 worldwide. According to the information, the share of this strain is growing in a number of countries, including the United States and Canada. In addition, individual cases have been recorded in Europe, but their number remains low so far. The WHO noted that they are closely monitoring the situation.
Doctor of Medical Sciences, infectious disease specialist and virologist Elena Malinnikova clarified that the new coronavirus strain PJ.2.1 may differ from others by causing severe sore throat and more prolonged fatigue after the illness. The main at-risk group is elderly people aged 60 and older.
