Scientists have revealed a new danger of magnetic storms
Magnetic storms are capable of disrupting global satellite communications, increasing radiation exposure for astronauts and pilots, and causing large-scale power outages. This is stated in a study by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Lancaster School of Physics and Astronomy, published in the journal Nature.
Scientists found that the belief that the strength of the solar wind decreases after reaching a certain point in the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere is an illusion. According to the study, the planet's response to space weather intensifies with greater intensity rather than weakening.
Experts noted that under extreme conditions, satellites could be knocked out of orbit, and GPS signals and communications would be disrupted. In this regard, the study's authors emphasized that when modeling such events, it is necessary to account for the absence of an upper limit to Earth's response to the solar wind.
On July 13, Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNIPU) reported that the Sun's magnetic field turned out to be governed by one of the most well-known laws of turbulence physics. Scientists discovered for the first time that fluctuations of the magnetic field at the star's poles are distributed according to a law that Soviet mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov derived back in 1941.
