"Not 10 thousand": the optimal number of steps per day has been named
The popular norm of 10,000 steps per day originated from marketing, not medical recommendations. This is a reminder from specialists in physical activity and healthy lifestyle.
As reported by BAKU.WS citing "Gazeta.Ru," the idea of mandatory "10,000 steps" originated in Japan in the 1960s as part of an advertising campaign for the Manpo-kei pedometer, whose name literally meant "10,000 steps counter."
According to physiologist Nina Duvanova, modern research shows that noticeable health benefits and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases begin at approximately 4,500 steps per day. Specialists associate the most pronounced effect with a level of about 7,000–7,500 steps, after which additional exertion brings fewer advantages.
Experts emphasize that not only the quantity but also the quality of walking matters. Poor posture, stiff footwear, and excessive strain can worsen back and joint pain, especially in people with spine or knee problems.
Specialists advise dedicating a few minutes to warming up before active walking and focusing not on "magic numbers" but on the comfort and capabilities of one's own body.
