Bananas Face Imminent Shortage on Planet Earth
Climate changes expected to affect the planet in the coming decades could lead to serious problems with banana production. By 2080, two-thirds of the land in Latin America and the Caribbean countries risk becoming unsuitable for growing banana crops, even though these territories provide about 80 percent of the world's exports.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to foreign media, in the face of such threats, more and more countries are thinking about the possibility of establishing production of the most popular fruits in their own territories. Turkey became a pioneer in this direction, which over the past twenty years, according to specialists, has made a real revolution in banana cultivation. Kazakhstan followed suit in growing the tropical fruit, and now Russia is planning to adopt this experience. "Lenta.ru" provides details about the situation.
Climate changes could make significant territories of Ecuador unsuitable for bananas
Global warming in the long term could significantly complicate banana cultivation in countries that are key producers of these fruits, reports The Guardian, citing a study by the international humanitarian organization Christian Aid. According to forecasts, the quality of bananas will decrease, and yields will sharply decline. In the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, by the end of the century, two-thirds of the areas may lose their suitability for production, despite the fact that most of the bananas entering the world market are grown there.
Experts believe that a solution to the problem still exists. As one of the possible options, they suggest a gradual shift of banana growing areas to the north. However, such a transition will require time and serious investments - in the construction of new warehouses, modernization of ports and the acquisition of transport.
