Named the spice that nullifies the effect of medications

Excessive consumption of cinnamon can accelerate the elimination of prescription drugs from the body, reducing their effectiveness.
This was reported by Shabana Khan, chief scientific officer at the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi, writes Daily Mail.
According to him, cinnamon is a popular spice often used in coffee, desserts, and even soups. However, people who regularly take medications should be careful: cinnamon is known to affect the absorption of at least 47 drugs. These include medications for diabetes, arthritis, asthma, HIV, AIDS, and depression.
Khan explained that the active component of the spice - cinnamaldehyde - enhances the work of certain receptors that accelerate drug metabolism, which reduces their effect.
In addition, cinnamon contains a large amount of coumarin - a blood-thinning substance. Its excess is especially dangerous for people taking anticoagulants, as it increases the risk of bleeding.
Scientists emphasize that the potential interaction of cinnamon with medications may be significantly broader than currently assumed and requires further study.
