Political Scientist: The Albanian-Christian Heritage of Karabakh Is a Crucial Component of Azerbaijan's Historical and Cultural Heritage

When studying the history of Karabakh, it once again becomes evident that this ancient Azerbaijani land was for centuries part of the states that existed on the territory of Azerbaijan. Numerous historical sources contain records and facts confirming this.

This was stated in a commentary to BAKU.WS by Doctor of Philosophy in Political Sciences, political analyst Shabnam Hasanova.

According to her, Caucasian Albania was one of the main residences of the Albanian Church. For nearly a millennium, Albania managed to preserve its political existence and independence. The Albanian king Javanshir favored a balanced policy between neighboring imperial states and, taking on a mediating mission, made a significant contribution to strengthening Albania's independence. His position undoubtedly reflected the interests of Albania, not Armenia.

Shabnam Hasanova noted that at the beginning of the 8th century, during the expansionist policy of the Arab Caliphate, the independence of Caucasian Albania was brought to an end. However, the royal dynasty took steps to preserve statehood — by restoring the state heritage on a small territory, it continued this policy. The Albanian feudal state in Karabakh serves as a vivid example of this.

The political analyst emphasized that the Christian heritage of Karabakh cannot be viewed exclusively through the prism of religious and cultural factors: "From the standpoint of preserving the historical memory and national heritage of Azerbaijan, this issue has important political significance. A number of Christian monuments located on the territory of Karabakh are directly linked to the centuries-old religious and cultural identity of Caucasian Albania."

According to her, historical sources also attest to this, and modern scientific research confirms that Caucasian Albania was one of the oldest states of the South Caucasus. It is precisely this issue that has remained one of the key components of the information war surrounding Karabakh for many years.

"The fact is that the political, religious, and cultural history of Caucasian Albania is an integral part of the ancient and medieval history of Azerbaijan. That is why the study, research, and correct conveyance of the Albanian Christian heritage to the international community is one of the most important elements of the steps taken by Azerbaijan in the direction of promoting and defending historical truths in the world," Shabnam Hasanova emphasized.

The political analyst noted that Azerbaijan does not limit itself to political rhetoric but conducts research on a scientific basis, supporting it with evidence. This demonstrates that the mastery and study of historical heritage, its correct transmission to future generations, as well as its presentation to the international community in the proper form and content, is one of Azerbaijan's key objectives.

"This objective is in no way compatible with attempts to falsify history or monopolize it by any party," she stated.

Shabnam Hasanova added that the preservation of the Christian religious traditions of the Udi community, the activities of the Albanian-Udi churches in Azerbaijan, is a clear example of the respect that Azerbaijan shows toward historical heritage. Therefore, the Christian heritage of Karabakh must be protected from political manipulations and must be based on historical and scientific facts.

"Azerbaijan is taking consistent steps to protect this heritage. The country strives to draw the attention of international organizations, diplomats, and foreign experts to the historical monuments of Karabakh, and also exposes false Armenian lies," the political analyst stated.

In conclusion, the Albanian-Christian heritage of Karabakh stands as one of the most important components of the historical and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan.
