The increased speed of Earth's rotation may lead to a reform in time measurement. This topic will be on the agenda at the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), New Atlas reports.

Due to the acceleration of Earth's rotation, scientists have faced the need to introduce a negative leap second to UTC before 2035. However, this solution carries enormous risks: removing a second could cause global digital chaos, triggering massive disruptions in telecommunications, power grids, and satellite navigation systems.

To avoid technical catastrophes, world experts plan to vote on replacing the leap second with a "leap hour." If this initiative is adopted, the accumulation of such an hour could take a millennium, effectively eliminating the need for frequent and dangerous time adjustments.
