Dentist explained how to recognize vitamin deficiencies by looking at teeth
Changes in gums, tongue, mucous membranes, and enamel can sometimes signal a deficiency of vitamins and minerals, but it is impossible to determine the deficiency based on these signs alone.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," dentist Alexei Soshnikov noted that bleeding and inflammation of the gums may be associated with a vitamin C deficiency. Mouth ulcers, burning, and redness of the tongue may be linked to a lack of iron or vitamin B12.
In children, a deficiency of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus can disrupt tooth formation, weaken enamel, and increase the risk of cavities. At the same time, an excess of fluoride can also damage enamel and cause fluorosis.
Changes in tooth color are sometimes associated with medications: for example, tetracycline antibiotics in children can stain developing teeth, and large doses of iron supplements can temporarily or permanently alter their shade.
Experts emphasize that such symptoms do not constitute an accurate diagnosis. To determine the cause, a medical consultation and, if necessary, laboratory tests are required.
