A Three-Billion Plan: What Does Israel-Greece Military Cooperation Promise the Region?

In the new episode of the "Military Chronicle" program on Baku TV, the reconstruction of Greece's air and missile defense system, the "Achilles' Shield" project worth 3 billion 35 million euros, implemented jointly with Israel, as well as the capabilities of the new defense architecture were analyzed.

According to the agreement signed on August 31 in Tel Aviv, Israel will create a multi-layered defense system for Greece against various threats - from ballistic and cruise missiles to combat aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Within the framework of the project, various radar systems and air defense complexes will be integrated under a unified command and control system.

The main elements of the "Achilles' Shield" will be the David's Sling, Barak MX, and SPYDER systems, as well as MMR radars by ELTA. David's Sling will be responsible for the upper echelon of defense, Barak MX for the medium and long range, and SPYDER All-in-One for the lower echelon. The first Barak MX systems are expected to be delivered in 2027.

The main advantage of the new architecture is said to be the integration of data from various sensors into a unified system, followed by the automatic selection of the most effective means of engagement depending on the nature of the threat. Existing Patriot systems are also planned to be integrated into this network.

At the same time, the replacement of the Osa and Tor-M1 systems with SPYDER systems is envisaged, while the S-300 surface-to-air missile systems will be gradually phased out of service.

The "Achilles' Shield" is expected to be fully established within 35 months and reach full operational readiness in July 2029.
