A non-obvious product that provokes obesity has been named
Fructose may have an independent effect on the development of obesity and metabolic disorders, acting not merely as an energy source. This is the conclusion reached by an international group of researchers.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Nature Metabolism, scientists studied the effects of common sweeteners - sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup - on the human body. The primary focus was on added fructose, rather than that which is naturally present in whole fruits.
According to Richard Johnson from the University of Colorado Anschutz, fructose is capable of acting as a distinct metabolic signal that triggers fat accumulation processes through mechanisms different from those of glucose.
The analysis showed that fructose processing in the body bypasses key regulatory stages of energy metabolism. This can lead to increased fat production, reduced levels of cellular energy (ATP), and the formation of substances associated with the development of metabolic disorders.
In the long term, such changes increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome - a condition that includes obesity, insulin resistance, and an elevated likelihood of cardiovascular diseases.
At the same time, the researchers clarify: the greatest danger is posed by so-called "free sugars," which are added to beverages and processed foods. Fructose found in whole fruits, when consumed in moderation, does not cause such effects. Moreover, the body is capable of synthesizing fructose on its own from glucose, which broadens the understanding of its role in disease development.
The authors of the study note that energy storage mechanisms, which evolved under conditions of food scarcity in the past, may contribute to the rise of chronic diseases in the modern environment of caloric excess.
In the scientists' opinion, a deeper study of the specific biological properties of fructose will enable the development of new approaches to the prevention and treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders.
