A "potato flood" has hit a European city
Berlin residents have begun receiving free potatoes at kindergartens, schools, churches, and non-profit organizations amid the largest harvest in 25 years, which has led to an excess of vegetables in the German capital.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to The Guardian, the record potato harvest in Berlin has already been dubbed the "potato flood." Authorities and volunteers are not only organizing free distribution points but also actively encouraging city residents to come and take the vegetables to avoid their disposal.
It is noted that homeless shelters, kindergartens, schools, churches, and NGOs have received significant volumes of produce. Even the Berlin Zoo has joined the initiative, taking tons of potatoes that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
In addition, the scale of the surplus was so large that authorities decided to send two trucks of potatoes to Ukraine. At the same time, numerous potato recipes are gaining popularity on the internet, shared by city residents.
