Residents of Tehran have pledged allegiance to the new leader of Iran, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, elected by the Assembly of Experts, with the ceremony held at the central Enghelab Square.

This was reported by Mehr.

"Members of the Assembly of Experts, scholars, and representatives of the country's elite pledged allegiance to the third leader of the Islamic Revolution and called this support a national and political duty," the agency writes.

According to ISNA, a huge crowd of citizens gathered at the square for the oath of allegiance. It is noted that, in addition to Iranian flags, participants of the ceremony held photographs of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as images of the new Iranian leader.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran also previously pledged allegiance to the new leader of the Islamic republic.

In Iran, the Supreme Leader does not take an oath of office upon assuming his position. On the contrary, after his election, representatives of the army, state institutions, and religious structures pledge allegiance to him.
