Why snoring can be deadly dangerous

Snoring is a common phenomenon that is often perceived as an "inconvenience for others."
But in reality, regular snoring is a symptom that may hide a dangerous disease.
In some cases, it may indicate a life-threatening condition - obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Let's figure out what snoring actually means and how it endangers life and health.
Snoring occurs when air passes through narrowed airways during sleep and causes vibration of the soft tissues of the pharynx. It can be occasional (for example, after alcohol) or chronic, which is much more dangerous. Causes of chronic snoring: excess weight, fat deposits around the neck narrow the airways, especially during sleep. Deviated septum, polyps, mechanical obstacles interfere with the free passage of air. Alcohol, sedatives relax the muscles of the pharynx, increasing vibration and narrowing. Age. With age, tissues lose tone, and the likelihood of snoring increases. Genetics. Some people are anatomically predisposed to narrow airways.
The most dangerous cause is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This is a condition in which brief breathing stops occur during sleep (from a few seconds to a minute or more) with dozens of episodes per night.
Strokes and heart attacks. Nocturnal hypoxia (lack of oxygen) dramatically increases the load on the heart and blood vessels.
Metabolic disorders. Increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hormonal imbalance.
Brain dysfunction. Decreased concentration, impaired memory, increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Emotional instability. Irritability, anxiety, depression are frequent companions of apnea.
Sudden death during sleep. In severe cases, fatal heart rhythm disturbances are possible.
What to do? Consult an otorhinolaryngologist or somnologist. Undergo a night sleep study (polysomnography). Change lifestyle: lose weight, avoid alcohol before bedtime, sleep on your side.
Snoring is not just noise. It's a warning. It may be the first symptom of severe and potentially fatal conditions. If you or your loved ones snore - don't delay a visit to the doctor.
Good sleep is not just comfort, it's the foundation of longevity.
