Popular berry named as an unexpected aid for heart support
The natural amino acid component of watermelon - L-citrulline - can enhance the production of nitric oxide, a key molecule responsible for vascular health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
As reported by BAKU.WS, this conclusion was reached by scientists from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, who presented a review in the journal Nutrients.
According to specialists, L-citrulline, found in the flesh and especially in the rind of watermelon, increases the concentration of L-arginine in the blood, which leads to increased nitric oxide synthesis. This process promotes vasodilation, improved blood flow, and reduced arterial pressure. Unlike direct intake of L-arginine, citrulline is not broken down in the liver, so it is considered a more effective and safe source for supporting the cardiovascular system. However, researchers clarify that the content of L-citrulline in fresh watermelon still remains insufficient for a pronounced therapeutic effect - to achieve a minimum dosage, one would have to eat very large quantities of flesh or rind. In this regard, a promising direction is the creation of concentrates, powders, and other forms of watermelon processing that allow obtaining high doses of the substance without excessive consumption of the fruit.
The authors of the review emphasize the need for long-term clinical studies, especially among people with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, to determine optimal doses and confirm the ability of watermelon L-citrulline to improve blood pressure indicators, vascular elasticity, and endothelial function.
