Improper storage of medications, for example, in the kitchen or bathroom, can make them useless and even harmful.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was explained by Olga Tkacheva, director of the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center of Pirogov University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"Special attention should be paid to the proper storage of medications. In old age, due to forgetfulness, medications are often left on the table, in the bathroom, or in the kitchen, where high temperature, humidity, and steam gradually change the properties of medications. Any medications can become useless or even harmful if they are not stored according to the instructions: high humidity, heat, or direct sunlight can destroy the active ingredients," says the doctor.

Tkacheva also emphasized that it is important to dispose of medications that have expired or have changed color, smell, or consistency, which, according to the specialist, many elderly people do not do.

"To avoid accidentally taking a spoiled medication, it is important to regularly review your home medicine cabinet and get rid of expired and suspicious medications. Designate a separate cabinet or box for medications. Do not keep medications in the bathroom, kitchen, or on the windowsill. The optimal storage place is dry, cool, and protected from direct light. If the package says 'store in a cool place,' place the medication in the refrigerator, but do not freeze them. Tablets should be kept in their original blisters and vials until completely used. Do not transfer different pills to one vial - you risk confusing them. Regularly check expiration dates and monitor the condition of the medications," concluded the medical professional.
