Doctor named the cause of constant nightmares

Russian specialists warn about the connection between regular nightmares and mental health disorders. Psychotherapist Yulia Romanenko from "SM-Clinic" shared important observations.
- If you constantly have nightmares - this is a signal that there is something inside your psyche that causes chronic anxiety. And in fact, this can have consequences: the cause is outside of awareness, which means that at any moment it can begin to manifest not only in sleep but also during the day, for example, in the form of causeless panic attacks, - the specialist warned.
According to the expert, frequent nightmares significantly reduce not only sleep quality but also the overall quality of life. Such dreams may indicate the presence of anxiety disorder, PTSD, or other psychological disorders.
Among the main causes of nightmares are unresolved psychological problems. During sleep, the brain continues to process daily experiences, and any unresolved conflicts, suppressed emotions, or traumatic events can manifest as unpleasant dreams.
Chronic stress and anxiety also play a significant role. Due to constant tension, the brain switches to "threat mode," which often leads to scenes of chase, falling, violence, or disasters appearing in dreams.
Viewing disturbing content before sleep, including horror movies and news about disasters, can exacerbate the situation. Research shows that people with increased anxiety, creative thinking, and rich imagination are more prone to nightmares.
To combat this problem, specialists recommend analyzing and working through your anxieties, looking for connections between dreams and real experiences.
- Try the "script rewriting" technique. If a nightmare repeats, imagine an alternative, positive ending. This reduces the emotional burden, - the doctor advised.
Experts emphasize the importance of sleep hygiene: going to bed at the same time, avoiding caffeine and heavy food before sleep, ventilating the bedroom. Meditation, breathing practices, and light yoga can also help. If the problem persists, it is recommended to consult a psychotherapist, reports "Gazeta.Ru".
