Doctors could not diagnose a woman for 56 years
In Brazil, doctors could not diagnose local resident Maria Lucia de Almeida Gomes for 56 years. Her story was reported by Metropoles.
Gomes began experiencing health problems when she was just two years old. As she grew up, her legs became curved, she lost her teeth prematurely, and developed pain in her feet and jaw problems. The woman, who had been taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs all her life, underwent 12 surgeries, but they did not yield results.
When the Brazilian woman turned 58, doctors were able to diagnose her with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets.
Specialists prescribed Gomes only one medication as therapy, which significantly improved her quality of life. It is specified that without the medication, all symptoms quickly return, so the woman cannot interrupt taking it.
