An international group of researchers has developed a unique antibody capable of simultaneously neutralizing two deadly viruses - Nipah and Hendra - while blocking their ability to mutate and evade therapy. The results of this revolutionary research have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.

Nipah and Hendra viruses, belonging to the henipavirus family, are known for their high lethality, causing severe inflammation of the lungs and brain. Nipah virus outbreaks are regularly recorded in South Asian countries, especially in Bangladesh and India. The Hendra virus is predominantly found in Australia, where it is transmitted to humans from bats through horses. Until now, humanity has had neither vaccines nor approved drugs against these deadly infections.

The innovative drug is a two-component molecule that combines the DS90 nanobody, which blocks the virus fusion protein, with the already known m102.4 antibody, which prevents the virus from attaching to the cell. This "double-barreled" solution demonstrated not only increased effectiveness but also unprecedented reliability: the viruses were unable to develop mutations to counteract the drug even after multiple attempts.

Animal experiments showed impressive results: the drug provided 100% protection when used prophylactically and saved half of the infected individuals when used therapeutically. It is important to note that the antibody is effective against both viruses - both Nipah and Hendra - including various strains and potential mutant forms.

Scientists emphasize that the developed strategy could become a universal model for combating particularly dangerous viral infections. The nanobodies used are of particular value, which, due to their compactness and stability, are ideal for rapid production, do not require a cold chain for storage, and can even be used in the form of inhalations.
