The Japanese government has warned of a high probability of a devastating "mega-earthquake" in the coming years. According to experts, the underwater Nankai Trough fault, located off the southwestern coast of the country, could become the source of a catastrophe and cause large-scale tsunamis with economic losses amounting to trillions of dollars.

According to the latest estimates by the government commission, the probability of a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8 to 9 in this region within the next 30 years is between 75 and 82%. Forecasts suggest that in such a scenario, seismic activity would reach maximum levels in the regions of Osaka, Wakayama, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki prefectures. Tsunami waves could reach heights of more than 20 meters, significantly exceeding the level of destruction observed during the 2011 tragedy.

The government has already updated its emergency response plan, which includes the construction of additional dams and reinforcement of protective structures, building evacuation shelters, expanding public education programs and conducting regular drills, and modernizing early warning systems

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that preparation for a possible catastrophe should be a joint effort of the state, municipalities, businesses, and public organizations. Local residents and tourists are also alarmed by the fact that it is impossible to predict the exact time and place of the earthquake.
