On January 29, in the Swiss city of Gland, a meeting took place between the vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and head of the IDEA Public Association Leyla Aliyeva and the Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Grethel Aguilar.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to AZERTAG, during the meeting, the main focus was on the increasing role of international cooperation against the backdrop of existing environmental challenges in Azerbaijan and the region, emphasizing the importance of coordinated approaches at global and regional levels. The parties held a broad exchange of views on the prospects for strengthening dialogue and implementing joint initiatives in this direction.

It was noted that the IDEA Public Association, which has been a full member of IUCN since 2014, actively participates in international initiatives in the field of nature conservation and biodiversity preservation, contributing to the expansion of cooperation in this area. The meeting participants, touching upon the issues of the joint pavilion presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress held last year in Abu Dhabi, as well as a number of other projects, noted the accumulated positive experience and expressed confidence in the successful continuation of mutual cooperation.

During the meeting, issues of organizing a high-level regional dialogue in Azerbaijan with the participation of IUCN, joint participation in international events, including within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), World Environment Day and COP31, as well as prospects for cooperation in these areas were discussed.

Following the meeting, a Declaration of Intent was signed, providing for activities to open an IUCN country office in Azerbaijan and expand cooperation.

The parties regarded the discussions as an important step towards developing long-term and multilateral cooperation between the IDEA Public Association and IUCN.

It should be noted that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), operating since 1948, is one of the leading international organizations in the field of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. In 1964, IUCN created the Red Book, reflecting the state of animal and plant species that are endangered, thereby making a significant contribution to global processes of environmental assessment and decision-making.
