Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening of the historical mosque building in Giyasly village after restoration

On July 18, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening of the historic mosque building after restoration in the village of Giyasly in the Aghdam district.

As reported by BAKU.WS, Presidential Assistant Anar Alakbarov informed the head of state about the work done.

Recall that President Ilham Aliyev visited the Giyasly Mosque during his trip to Aghdam on May 28, 2021.

The Giyasly Mosque was also one of the historical and religious monuments of Karabakh subjected to Armenian vandalism. During the occupation of the Aghdam district by the Armenian armed forces, the mosque building suffered serious damage, the roof and domes were completely destroyed, and it was used as a cattle barn.

After the liberation of the Aghdam district from Armenian occupation in 2022, the restoration of the Giyasly Mosque began. The restoration work was carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. In order to preserve the original appearance of the mosque, archival materials and videographic sources were used when developing the restoration project. The spiral staircase preserved in the interior indicated the existence of two minarets on the southern side of the mosque. Therefore, following tradition, the minarets were built in the southern part of the mosque. With the help of special installations, the tilted stone columns were restored, and stone arches and domes were rebuilt. The walls that had lost their original appearance, from which the plaster had crumbled, were repaired, and the dilapidated mihrab was restored. The facade stones were washed with special chemicals, and the joints between the old stones were cleaned. Auxiliary buildings were constructed around the mosque. By a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Giyasly Mosque was included in the list of immovable historical and cultural monuments of local significance in 2001.
