Candidate from Azerbaijan elected member of the UN Human Rights Committee
On June 15, in New York, United States, during the 42nd meeting of the States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the candidate from Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee (ICCPR) for 2027-2030.
As reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in the elections held amid high international competition, candidates from 16 countries, along with Azerbaijan, competed for nine vacant seats in the said body.
The candidate nominated by our country, Fuad Zarbiyev, Professor of International Law at the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, received the highest number of votes in the first round of voting, securing the support of 131 States Parties, and was elected as a member of the committee.
It should be noted that the UN Human Rights Committee is the body responsible for monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966. The body consists of 18 independent experts, reviews the compliance of States Parties with their obligations under the Covenant, and plays an important role in the development of the international human rights protection system.
