The Path to National Salvation
Today, the Azerbaijani people celebrate National Salvation Day. Exactly 33 years ago, the country was in a critical state, on the verge of collapse.

The citizens of Azerbaijan, seeing the hopelessness of the situation, literally demanded that Heydar Aliyev lead the country. The national leader, responding to the people's call, arrived from Nakhchivan to Baku and was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan. And in the fall of 1993, he was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan by popular vote.
From that moment on, the course of Azerbaijani history sharply changed its trajectory: from decline and the threat of losing independence to development, strengthening of the state, and its emergence as a key player in the South Caucasus.
