EU and Ukraine officially began accession negotiations
The European Union and Ukraine have officially launched accession negotiations at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg.
This was announced by European Council President António Costa on the social network X.
"Today we take a historic step towards Ukraine's future in the EU by opening official negotiations on its accession," he wrote.
The European Commission had been pushing for the start of these negotiations since June 2024, but they were blocked by Hungary for two years.
On June 15, Ukraine opened the negotiating cluster of "fundamentals" (fundamental provisions), which includes five chapters: justice, freedom and security; legal and fundamental rights; financial control; public procurement; statistics. Candidate countries must fully align their legislation with EU standards across all these chapters.
