UN Secretary-General warned of the risk of a new full-scale war in the Persian Gulf
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the current ceasefire regime in the Persian Gulf region remains extremely fragile and could escalate into a full-scale war.
This was reported by TASS.
"Let me now turn to the Persian Gulf region, where the ceasefire looks more like a reduction in the intensity of fire, which we have witnessed in the form of escalating attacks and bellicose rhetoric over the past 48 hours," Guterres said. "We must not underestimate the risk that this lull could once again escalate into a full-scale conflict."
According to the UN Secretary-General, civilians and civilian infrastructure in several countries of the region have been subjected to attacks. He also noted that shipping restrictions in the area of the Strait of Hormuz are causing instability worldwide, contributing to rising energy prices, disrupting supply chains, and increasing inflationary pressure, particularly in developing countries.
"I urge all parties to observe the ceasefire and redouble efforts to reach a long-term agreement," Guterres emphasized.
Earlier, the United States Central Command reported carrying out strikes on Iranian territories after an American Apache helicopter was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked American bases in the Middle East region.
