Several days ago, the authoritative American newspaper New York Times published a sensational article that attracted the attention of a global audience and provoked active discussions within Iran. Citing informed sources, the authors of the piece claim that the original goal of the military campaign launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28 of this year was to return former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this is discussed in a new analytical segment on the YouTube channel "Free Iran."

The publication caused enormous resonance largely due to its authors: the text was prepared by well-known journalists - Farnaz Fassihi, who specializes in Iranian affairs, and Ronen Bergman, who is believed to have extensive connections within Israeli intelligence services.

The article mentions a statement by US President Donald Trump, made after the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and a number of other high-ranking officials as a result of airstrikes on the first day of the conflict: at that time, he noted that it would be preferable if someone from within the country's internal political forces took control of governance.

It is worth noting that at the time, various speculations were put forward within Iran itself about who exactly was meant, and among the possible candidates, the name of former President Hassan Rouhani, who advocates dialogue with the West, was mentioned. However, it now turns out that the central role in the American-Israeli scenario was assigned not to any well-known reformist politician but, paradoxically, to a radical conservative known for his harsh anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric. American officials familiar with the details of the plan confirmed to the article's authors that the scenario developed by Israel had been coordinated with Ahmadinejad himself, but the subsequent course of events led to the rapid failure of this operation.

As reported in the piece, strikes on Ahmadinejad's Tehran residence on the first day of the war were carried out with the aim of freeing him from house arrest and extracting him from the control of fighters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Nevertheless, during the attack, part of his security detail was killed, and the former president himself was wounded, after which in the following days he lost hope in such a scenario for regime change.

It should be recalled that at the time, rumors circulated in the information space about Ahmadinejad's death, but this information was subsequently not confirmed. Since then, the exact whereabouts and health condition of the former leader remain unknown. Throughout this entire period, Ahmadinejad appeared in the public space only once, expressing condolences over the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
