William Ruto: Kenya is implementing the largest housing project in Africa
There are currently more than 1,100 informal settlements in Kenya, where about 7 million people are forced to live in slum conditions.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to Report, this was stated by President of Kenya William Samoei Ruto during his speech at the WUF13 Leaders Summit in Baku.
Calling the current situation intolerable, the head of state said that to fundamentally change it, the government has fully exempted targeted state housing projects from taxation.
According to the president, to reduce construction costs, the Kenyan authorities have engaged leading architects and specialized experts in cooperation, and have also transitioned to large-scale block development: "Companies and specialists that previously built 30-40 houses are now given the opportunity to implement projects of 3,000-4,000 apartments. We want all residential buildings to be constructed in accordance with established standards. A special financing mechanism has been established for this purpose. A separate fund has been created, and a special levy system has been introduced to finance this sector."
William Samoei Ruto emphasized that the largest construction program on the African continent is currently being implemented in Kenya. "273 thousand apartments are under construction, and we have already handed over 8 thousand keys. In total, 700 thousand housing units are being prepared. By the end of the year, we have planned the construction of 55 thousand homes," he noted.
