31 years have passed since the terrorist attack at the "20 January" metro station.
As reported by BAKU.WS, on March 19, 1994, at 13:00, an explosion thundered at the "20 January" metro station. A homemade bomb with a timing mechanism exploded in the lead car of the train at the moment when the train stopped at the station. As a result of the terrorist act, 14 people were killed and 49 others were injured.
The perpetrator of the terrorist attack, Oktay Gurbanov, died in the explosion. Among the dead was jazz musician and People's Artist of Azerbaijan Rafig Babayev.
Members of the Lezgin nationalist movement "Sadval" were arrested on suspicion of committing the crime. The organizers and those accused of committing the terrorist act established connections with the special services of Armenia, and in April-May 1992, 30 citizens of Azerbaijan underwent special training at a training base on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.
During the investigation, it was established that the terrorists planned, according to instructions, along with the "20 January" metro, to carry out terrorist attacks at the "Nizami" cinema, the Heydar Aliyev Palace, and the Baku Lamp Factory.
11 people were convicted for the terrorist act, two of whom were sentenced to death, and nine to various prison terms.
The names of those killed as a result of the terrorist act on March 19, 1994, are immortalized at the "20 January" metro station.
