Lebanon enters historic negotiations with Israel
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for historic direct negotiations with his long-standing adversary Israel.
This was reported by Reuters.
It is noted that after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finally responded to the call for peace negotiations, Lebanon had no choice but to engage in direct talks.
Nevertheless, the armed group Hezbollah opposes direct negotiations with Israel, casting doubt on its willingness to comply with any ceasefire agreement reached by the state.
"Negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are, frankly, pointless because those conducting them on behalf of Lebanon have no leverage," said a Lebanese official close to the group, speaking on condition of anonymity.
It should be recalled that Israel intensified its aerial attacks on Lebanon after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel on March 2, on the third day of a joint American-Israeli operation against Iran. Since then, Israel has expanded its ground offensive.
