Experts have begun forensic excavations at a former mother and child home in Ireland, where the remains of nearly 800 children are buried. The institution is located in the town of Tuam, County Galway.

As BAKU.WS reports with reference to Vechernyaya Moskva, unmarried pregnant women were sent to this place from 1925 to 1961, when Ireland was under strong influence of Catholicism and illegitimate children were considered sinful. According to historian Catherine Corless, most of the newborns were dumped in a sewage tank called "the pit." The researcher was able to establish the deaths of 798 children, only two of whom were buried in the nearest cemetery.

The goal is to identify as many remains as possible using DNA analysis and rebury everyone with dignity.
