Unexpected benefits of almonds caught scientists by surprise

Research conducted by specialists from the Linus Pauling Institute and the College of Health at Oregon State University has shown: regular consumption of almonds can reduce risks associated with metabolic syndrome. The work is published in the journal Nutrition Research.
The study involved adults suffering from metabolic syndrome - a condition characterized by abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, low levels of "good" cholesterol, and high levels of triglycerides. Volunteers were divided into two groups: the first group consumed a 320-calorie portion of almonds daily (approximately 45 nuts) for 12 weeks, while the second group consumed an equivalent amount of calories in the form of crackers.
After four weeks, participants in the first group showed increased levels of vitamin E - a powerful antioxidant found in almonds. There was also a decrease in total and "bad" cholesterol, a reduction in waist circumference, and improved gut health.
Scientists emphasize that vitamin E is one of the most deficient components in the American diet, and almonds can be an excellent source of it. Specialists recommend including nuts in the daily menu in the absence of contraindications - especially for people at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
