Scientists have made an important discovery about a unique fossil that is 500 million years old

Scientists have revised the origin of the ancient fossil Shishania aculeata and concluded that it was previously incorrectly classified as an ancestor of mollusks.

A new study conducted by specialists from Durham University (UK) sheds light on the early evolution of life in the Cambrian period, reports Interesting Engineering.

The fossil, approximately 500 million years old, was found in southern China and had long been considered a relative of mollusks due to external features - structures resembling legs and protective spines. However, detailed analysis showed: the "legs" are actually decomposed internal organs, and the body of Shishania more closely resembled a bag with spines than a developed animal.

Disguise of the ancient creature

According to one of the study's authors, Dr. Martin Smith, Shishania turned out to be a "master of disguise." Scientists were long misled by the external outlines of the fossil, which turned out to be the result of an unusual fossilization process. New data indicate similarities with chancelloriids - primitive marine creatures without a head, mouth, or organs that lived on the sea floor.

A new chapter in the history of life

Researchers believe that this discovery will help better understand the evolutionary pathways of early animals and fill important gaps in the fossil record.

"When we noticed that chancelloriids from the same rock were preserved in almost identical ways, it became clear: we weren't looking at an ancestor of mollusks, but something completely different," noted Dr. Smith.

The discovery gives scientists a new reference point for studying how more complex body forms could have developed in primitive organisms over time.
