Creatine, known for decades as one of the most effective sports supplements, is opening new horizons for application. In addition to increasing physical endurance, this substance demonstrates unexpected potential in combating depressive states, Alexey Shishkin, assistant of the Department of Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine and Physical Culture at the Institute of Preventive Medicine of Pirogov University, told "Gazeta.Ru".

"Creatine functions as a kind of 'energy buffer' for muscle tissue. During intense physical exertion, whether it's a sprint or strength exercises, it significantly accelerates the recovery process of ATP molecules - the key energy resource of cells. This allows for a substantial increase in the duration and effectiveness of workouts. Interestingly, in depressive states, energy metabolism disruption is often observed in the brain: neurons experience an ATP deficit. Creatine, by increasing the concentration of this molecule, contributes to more stable functioning of nerve cells," the specialist explained.

The interaction of creatine with essential neurotransmitters is also noteworthy.

"Creatine indirectly stimulates serotonin synthesis, which potentially enhances the therapeutic effect of antidepressants. A notable 2012 study showed that women with severe depression who took creatine in combination with medications demonstrated more pronounced improvement in emotional state. Additionally, creatine provides protection for dopaminergic neurons from the negative effects of stress, which is especially relevant for diseases such as Parkinson's. Due to its regulation of balance with glutamate, which acts as an excitatory mediator, creatine can reduce anxiety levels, as confirmed by experiments on animal models," the doctor emphasized.

Despite promising research results, creatine is not a universal solution to the problem. Its effectiveness in depression varies significantly depending on gender: results are less pronounced in males compared to females. It should also be noted that in some cases, this supplement may trigger manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder.

"It's necessary to understand that creatine is not an alternative to antidepressants or psychotherapeutic methods. It can be considered exclusively as an auxiliary component of complex therapy, and its use without medical supervision is potentially dangerous. In particular, the supplement can modify the action of various medications - enhancing the effect of some drugs and weakening the action of others, which can lead to unpredictable consequences," the specialist concluded.
