About 60-80% of kidney stones consist of calcium oxalates - strong, insoluble and difficult-to-crush compounds. This was reported by BAKU.WS with reference to "Gazeta.Ru".

According to urologist and oncologist, professor and head of the urological department No. 67 of the Moscow Urological Center Vigen Malkhasyan, products with high oxalate content - buckwheat, tomatoes, black tea, beets and others - significantly increase the risk of urolithiasis.

Oxalates are salts of oxalic acid containing calcium. About 30% come from food, and 70% are formed as a result of vitamin C metabolism.

"Oxalates are the end product of metabolism. They do not break down and are excreted in urine. In urine, they combine with calcium, forming complexes that crystallize and become stones," the specialist explained.

The main factor in stone formation is hyperoxaluria - increased oxalate content in urine. It can be:

alimentary - due to excess oxalates in the diet;

enteral - when oxalates are excessively absorbed in the intestine.

Calcium plays a key role in reducing the absorption of oxalates, so when experiencing oxaluria, it's important to consume dairy products.

"On average, a person gets 300-1000 mg of oxalates per day. In treatment, it's important to reduce this amount to 50 mg. Products with high oxalate content include cocoa, chocolate, black tea, beets, carrots, spinach, sorrel, eggplant, green pepper, parsley, rhubarb, celery, tomatoes, figs, raspberries, nuts and buckwheat," the expert noted.

With oxalate stones, it's important to check the level of oxalates in urine. If it's elevated, it's necessary to limit products from the list, reduce consumption of vitamin C, salt and animal protein, as well as increase the proportion of dairy products and fiber.
