Media: France has received a real opportunity to leave NATO
The initiative of the vice-chairman of the National Assembly (lower house of the French parliament) Clémence Guetté calling for the country's withdrawal from NATO could become a reality against the background of disagreements within the alliance.
This opinion was expressed by the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung (BZ).
"What has long been considered a political pipe dream has suddenly become a real possibility: France's withdrawal from NATO. The discussion (about Guetté's initiative - ed.) has gained new relevance thanks to the United States of America's deliberate decision to officially return to undisguised imperial policy," the article states.
Guetté stated in an interview with BZ that maintaining the status of a member of the alliance, which is led by a power that does not recognize international law, is undesirable for France, undermines the country's stability, and puts it at risk of being drawn into conflicts that contradict national interests.
BZ noted that the country's president Emmanuel Macron has also expressed doubts about the direction of NATO's development and has deployed French troops in Greenland, in part to counter threats from Washington.
As the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche notes, the party "La France Insoumise" (France Unbowed), of which Guetté is a member, has regularly condemned the actions of the alliance, advocated for its dissolution, and has repeatedly called in recent years for France to withdraw from participation in NATO activities. In addition, in December 2021, a deputy from this party, Bastien Lachaud, submitted a resolution to parliament calling on the government to begin the process of withdrawing from NATO's unified command, but it was not approved.
