In recent days, residents of Azerbaijan have faced a sharp increase in the prices of potatoes and onions. Prices that were previously only seen in supermarkets have now become a reality at markets as well. Buyers sadly recall that just last year, a kilogram of potatoes could be purchased for 50 qapiks – 1 manat, but now the minimum price starts at 1.20 manats and can reach up to 2 manats. Onions have also significantly increased in price compared to last year.

During filming at markets, Xəzər Xəbər correspondents observed that a kilogram of onions is being sold from 1.20 manats, and potatoes from 1.50 manats. Despite the obvious situation, some sellers tried to refute both the words of buyers and the actual state of affairs. They claimed that, although there is little produce available, prices remain acceptable, and the problem lies in the low purchasing power of the population.

Economist Khalid Kerimli confirms that over the past few days, prices for potatoes and onions have indeed risen sharply. According to the State Statistics Committee, in February, vegetable prices increased by 4.9% compared to January, and in the first month of the year – by 4.1% compared to December. Potatoes and onions are among the main vegetables accounting for the bulk of price increases.

Among the factors influencing the price increase, the expert highlighted the increase in transportation costs, which raise the cost of potatoes and onions, as well as the rise in gas prices for entrepreneurs, which significantly increases their expenses.

According to expert forecasts, no significant reduction in potato and onion prices should be expected in the next few weeks. However, with an increase in the share of local produce in the markets, there may be a relative decrease in the prices of these popular vegetables.
