Researchers from the University of Surrey have discovered: cocoa, black tea, apples, and grapes contain special plant compounds - flavan-3-ols, which can lower blood pressure and improve vascular function.

Scientists analyzed data from 145 clinical studies and found that regular consumption of these products is associated with lower blood pressure - sometimes the effect was comparable to that of special medications. Additionally, flavan-3-ols strengthen the endothelium - the inner lining of blood vessels.

"Common foods like tea, chocolate, or apples can be a pleasant way to improve heart health. The key is moderation," noted the lead author of the study, Professor Christian Heiss.

However, specialists emphasize: this is not about replacing medications. Flavan-3-ols are just a useful addition to a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. For example, a cup of tea, a piece of dark chocolate, or a handful of grapes a day is already a step in the right direction. But it's not worth overdoing it: excess sweets can have the opposite effect.

Research in this area continues. Scientists intend to find out exactly how flavan-3-ols work and how much of them should be consumed to get maximum benefits without harm.

Recall that earlier, dietitians warned: processed meat (such as sausage or bacon), even in small quantities, can raise blood pressure.
