In April 1920, the Russian army invaded Azerbaijan and occupied it.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in an interview with "Al-Arabiya".

The head of state noted that after the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was formed:

"This was the first democratic republic in the Muslim world, founded in May 1918. It existed until April 1920, when the Russian army invaded Azerbaijan and occupied the country. The Bolsheviks, who carried out the revolution of 1917, deceived the people. Their slogans were: "factories and plants to the workers, land to the peasants, freedom to the peoples". We created our own state. But the Bolsheviks took it away from us.

In April 1920, the Russian army invaded Azerbaijan and occupied it. In November of the same year, just a few months after this, the government of Soviet Russia decided to take Zangezur, which we call Western Zangezur, from Azerbaijan and transfer it to Armenia. This is how Azerbaijan was divided into two parts - the main part and Nakhchivan, with Western Zangezur between them. In Soviet times, this was not a problem because there were no borders or wars. People could freely travel by car or by rail from the main part of the country to Nakhchivan. But after Armenia began its aggression against Azerbaijan, they cut this communication line. They blocked the corridor".
