In the Brazilian city of Campinas, São Paulo state, the world's largest mosquito breeding factory has started operating, capable of releasing up to 190 million specimens per week, reports Oddity Central. The construction of this facility is part of a large-scale national program to combat dengue fever.

On an area of 1300 square meters, they breed Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the harmless bacterium Wolbachia. This bacterium prevents the dengue virus from reproducing in the insect's body. After being released into the natural environment, these mosquitoes cannot transmit the virus to humans, and their offspring inherit the same protective characteristic.

The breeding process is conducted under strict control: larvae are kept in trays with water of a specific temperature, adult males are given a sweet solution, and females receive animal blood placed in special packets that mimic human skin. The mosquitoes live in cages for about a month, during which time they reproduce and lay eggs, starting a new cycle.

According to experts, the effectiveness of this method has already been confirmed in several countries, but Brazil is the first to apply the technology on such a large scale. This is due to a record outbreak of the disease: in 2024, the country accounted for more than 80% of all dengue cases worldwide.

Thanks to the capacity of the new factory, they plan to produce enough mosquitoes to provide preventive coverage for up to 100 million people annually.
