The EU plans to change its visa strategy by the end of 2025
Brussels is preparing stricter measures for third countries as part of its upcoming EU visa strategy, which could be adopted at the end of 2025.
This is reported by Euractiv.
According to the publication, the measures will help more closely link the visa regime with how willing a particular country is to cooperate with the bloc in the area of migration. It will also grant the European Commission powers to suspend or prohibit the issuance of visas to citizens of countries with "seriously deteriorated relations" with the EU.
The draft provides for the possibility of introducing multiple Schengen visas valid for 10 years "for verified travelers" and a new system for reviewing visa-free regimes. This will allow Brussels to revoke or suspend them more quickly.
The publication also notes that the new visa support office of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) "will turn visa policy into both an economic and geopolitical lever".
