The death toll following a series of powerful earthquakes in Venezuela has exceeded 3,300 people.

As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Information and Communications of Venezuela, the number of victims of the devastating earthquakes in the country has risen to 3,342 people. According to official data, 16,740 residents sustained injuries of varying severity, and over 17,000 people lost their homes.

The agency specified that 190 buildings were completely destroyed as a result of the natural disaster, while another 856 structures sustained damage of varying degrees. Rescuers managed to evacuate and extract nearly 6,500 people from under the rubble. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.

According to the authorities, a state of emergency was declared following two powerful earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, which occurred on the evening of June 24, less than one minute apart. The tremors were felt not only in the capital Caracas but also in a number of other regions of the country.

Due to serious infrastructure damage, the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, located near Caracas, was closed. The capital's metro system and rail services also temporarily ceased operations.

Disruptions to electricity supply, water supply, mobile communications, and internet access have been reported in many areas of the country. Gas supply was cut off in damaged residential buildings as a safety precaution.

According to foreign experts, as search and rescue operations are completed, the official figures on the dead and injured may change significantly, as debris removal continues in the most affected areas.
