The US has decided to create a new nuclear warhead for the first time in 40 years
The United States is developing a new W93/Mk7 nuclear warhead for the first time in nearly 40 years.
This was reported by the publication Interesting Engineering.
It is expected to replace aging components of the existing arsenal and will be compatible with advanced submarine-launched missiles. The U.S. Navy is working on the warhead's development together with the National Nuclear Security Administration.
In addition, the United States is modernizing its Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2) missiles.
It was previously reported that the U.S. had begun developing a new nuclear-armed bunker-busting bomb. The system in question is the Nuclear Deterrent System-Air-delivered (NDS-A). It is designed to strike bunkers and other underground facilities. Approximately $100 million is expected to be allocated for its development.
