A popular supplement that shortens life expectancy in men has been named
A study by an international group of scientists has shown that elevated levels of tyrosine—an amino acid found in protein-rich foods and popular supplements for improving concentration—may be linked to reduced life expectancy in men.
As reported by BAKU.WS with reference to the journal Aging, specialists from Hong Kong and the United States analyzed data from more than 270,000 participants in the UK Biobank project. The results showed that high levels of tyrosine in the blood correlate with an increased risk of premature death.
According to the researchers' estimates, an excess of this amino acid may reduce men's life expectancy by approximately one year. However, no similar pattern was identified in women.
According to foreign experts, tyrosine plays an important role in the production of dopamine, adrenaline, and other neurotransmitters, but its effect on aging processes remains insufficiently studied. One possible explanation for the identified association, the scientists suggest, is the substance's influence on the development of insulin resistance and related age-associated diseases.
The authors of the study emphasize that the findings require further confirmation. In the future, the researchers intend to determine whether dietary changes or other measures can safely regulate tyrosine levels and influence longevity.
